Hi Sam, thank you for taking the time to read the report and to comment. Our overall aim, which we share with a number of different partner organizsations, is to shift the gender balance in computing. Of all academic subjects at GCSE and A level, computing has one of the lowest proportions of girls choosing to study it and we think there is room to change that. We hear from industry how important it is to have diverse people working in technology, including both men and women with a good understanding of the ethics, social issues, user interactions and accessibility of digital products as well as the technical aspects of hardware and software. The role models who took part in this study engaged the children with these values, to help them feel like computing is a subject where everyone can belong.

My own conclusion based on my experience engaging kids with technology and other observational studies is that we may never see a perfect 50/50 balance of boys and girls in technology. Very often people fail to address the discrepancy because they don’t take into account the difference in academic interest between boys and girls.
In particular, technology is very “thing” oriented. Boys tend to do well with hands on learning and working with “things.”
